Social Innovation Park Experiment

Social Innovation ParkThe Social Innovation Park (SIP) is a new European infrastructure for designing and piloting new solutions to emerging social needs. The SIP is implemented in Bilbao, the Basque Country in Spain, by DenokInn. DenokInn is the Basque Centre for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and New Business Development. Their objective is to transform ideas and technologies into new businesses.

Together with DenokInn, ConfCooperative (IT) and Euclid Network (UK) DemNet is trying to pilot the Social Innovation Park. The Park has the goal to develop and implement new methodologies for emerging social challenges. The outcomes and lessons learned from this project will be disseminated and submitted to the European Commission in forms of recommendations. The focus areas of the project is social entrepreneurship.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Design and launch a Social Innovation Laboratory
  • Implement a Social Enterprise Generator
  • Offer a Social Innovation Academy
  • Identify and coordinate a Social Business Angels Club
  • Elaborate a set of recommendations for the European Commission
  • Generate a tool kit for social entrepreneurs

In 2011 two meetings were held in Bilbao hosted by DenokInn. The first meeting served to present various projects of the Social Innovation Park to provide the partners with good understanding how it works and how it channels innovative ideas into social enterprises. For example, the Hiriko project was visited, which is a revolutionary idea to transform local innovation and manufacturing capacity into a new concept of urban mobility.

The second meeting was devoted to present the different methodologies used at the Social Innovation Park for identifying innovative approaches to emerging social needs as well as to practice with some real examples the use of the methodologies. A standard methodology was presented used for designing training contents for new occupations and jobs. The training materials developed for the Palliative Care Services were presented as a real example of application of this methodology.

In 2012 the project will be aimed at developing a Social Impact Bond or similar financial model to fund "payment-by-results" and service contracts.
